Murzasichle or Zakopane: where to stay under the Tatras
Ten kilometres of difference that decide what your holiday will look like. An honest comparison, including the drawbacks of both.
This is the question guests ask us more often than any other. Zakopane is the obvious choice because everyone knows it, but it is not always the best one. Murzasichle sits about ten kilometres from the centre of the Tatra capital, and those ten kilometres change more than the map suggests.
Here is the comparison without the gloss. Zakopane has advantages that Murzasichle cannot buy with any standard, and the other way round.
What Zakopane gives you
Zakopane is above all convenience in the evening. Restaurants open late, Krupówki for a stroll after dinner, a cinema, museums, sports shops and everything within walking distance. If you are travelling without a car, that settles it.
The second advantage is the cable car to Kasprowy Wierch and the funicular to Gubałówka, both a short walk away. The third, less obvious one, is the weather: when it rains in the mountains for three days, a town offers more to do than a village.
What Murzasichle gives you
The first thing is quiet. In the evening you hear the forest, not the street, and that is not a marketing phrase but a physical difference you feel from day one.
The second is the morning. The biggest cost of staying in Zakopane, which almost nobody mentions before you arrive, is the morning traffic. Anyone who wants to be on the trail by eight sits in town in high season or circles looking for a parking space. From Murzasichle you drive against the main flow.
The third is money. For the budget that buys a room in central Zakopane, in Murzasichle you get an apartment with a kitchenette, very often with breakfast and access to a spa area as well.
- Trailheads on the way, not on the other side of town
- Parking at the property, with no hunting for a space and no fees
- In winter a lift within walking distance and a ski bus to the door
- A calmer standard for the same money
When to choose Zakopane
If you are coming for two days, without a car, for the first time, and you want the classics: Krupówki, Gubałówka, Kasprowy and Morskie Oko. A room in town will save you the logistics, and you will sleep through the noise anyway.
When to choose Murzasichle
If you are coming for a week, with children, with a car, or simply to rest. If you want to cook some of your meals, come back from the trail to a sauna rather than to the bustle of a town, and be sure you will not lose an hour getting out of the city in the morning.
If you come in winter with a child who is just learning to ski, the difference is larger still. A lift a few hundred metres from your bed means you can go back for lunch and a nap after two hours, then head out again. From Zakopane that is not workable.
An honest summary
Murzasichle will not replace Zakopane if you are after nightlife and everything within walking distance. Zakopane will not replace Murzasichle if you are after quiet, space and a quick start into the mountains.
The choice looks simple to us, though we admit we are biased. If you are unsure, write to us and describe how you picture those few days. We will tell you honestly whether this is the place for you.
