Summer under the Tatras without the crowds: five days from Murzasichle

A ready plan day by day, arranged to skip the queues, beat the storms and avoid spending your holiday in the car.

The most common mistake when planning a week under the Tatras is cramming everything into the first three days. The result is always the same: exhaustion, traffic and the feeling that the holiday passed in queues.

This plan arranges the attractions so the effort spreads evenly and each day has a different character. The base is Murzasichle, so nothing is more than forty minutes away.

Day one: getting to know the area

Do not plan a trail on the day you arrive. Walk around Murzasichle, look at the wooden buildings and go as far as the clearing by Stacja Hajduk, from which you can see the whole ridge. That is about half an hour on foot, and it gives you a better sense of the area than an hour with a map.

In the evening dinner at an inn and a first visit to the spa area. A sauna after a whole day in the car does more good than you expect.

Day two: the first trail, gently

Wiktorówki and Polana Rusinowa. An easy route, a view out of all proportion to the effort, and your body gets the signal that the mountains have started, without three days of aching legs.

After you return there is still time for an afternoon in the garden or a trip into Zakopane for a walk, once the afternoon crowd has thinned.

Day three: the big hike

A day for Hala Gąsienicowa from Brzeziny or for Kasprowy Wierch. Set off by half past seven at the latest, return after three.

If you have electric bikes, the ride up from Brzeziny shortens the climb enough to turn the whole route into a pleasure rather than a challenge.

The evening is for recovery only: sauna, jacuzzi and an early night.

Day four: water and rest

After a big hike nobody fancies another climb. This is a good moment for the thermal baths: Gorący Potok if you want calm, Bania in Białka if you are travelling with children.

An alternative for those who do not like pools: a rafting trip on the Dunajec or the Stary Bór rope park with children. Both take half a day and require no fitness.

Day five: something completely different

Leave the last day for whatever you feel like on the spot. Proven options: the Oscypek Museum with a demonstration at a shepherd's hut, the Sky Walk viewing tower in Poronin, or a bike trip towards Głodówka with its panorama of the Tatras.

In the evening an inn with live music. That is a good way to close the week, because it stays in the memory longer than another summit.

What not to plan

A few things that eat a day in season and give less than they promise.

  • Morskie Oko in the middle of the day in July, a queue at the entrance and a crowd on the route
  • Krupówki on a Saturday afternoon, unless you like a crush
  • Two big hikes back to back, the second always turns out worse
  • Kasprowy without booking a cable car ticket in advance

Why from Murzasichle

This plan works because every point is within forty minutes at most, and the morning drive runs against the main flow of traffic. From central Zakopane the same week would mean two hours a day in traffic and hunting for parking.
