A winter weekend with children: a slope by the house, a ski bus and snow tubing

What a skiing weekend looks like when the lift is within walking distance and you can go back for lunch and a nap between runs.

A winter trip with a small child usually comes apart over logistics. Packing the gear, the drive, hunting for a space by the slope, changing in the car, and then the same in reverse, this time with tears, because the child got cold after forty minutes.

In Murzasichle that problem disappears, because the distances are different. Here is what such a weekend really looks like.

The Hajduk slope: a few hundred metres from the door

The nearest lift is about five hundred metres from the guesthouse. That is a distance you cover in a few minutes, so packing skis into the car is not an issue.

Hajduk is small and that is exactly why it is good for a start: a gentle gradient, a short run, and no crowd of experienced skiers sweeping past a child who is still learning. Our guests use free ski passes here.

Murzasichle Ski: once the child can ski

About a kilometre further there is a station with six lifts, runs of varying difficulty, an equipment rental shop and a ski school. A free ski bus stops at the guesthouse, so you do not need a car even for this, and our guests ski on free passes here too.

A ski school on site is the solution that saves family nerves. Two hours with an instructor usually achieve more than two days of trying to teach your own child.

A rhythm of the day that actually works

Being close to the slope lets you break the day into two short parts instead of one long one. That changes everything, because a small child loses interest after an hour and a half, no matter what the pass cost.

  • Breakfast without rushing, the buffet is included in the rate
  • Around ten the first outing to the slope, an hour and a half to two hours
  • Back for lunch and a nap, with no driving
  • After three a second, shorter outing or snow tubing
  • From four the spa area, children usually fall asleep earlier than usual

When skiing gets boring

Snow tubing, that is riding down on inflatable rings, is an attraction that works even on children with no interest in skiing at all. It needs no equipment and no skill.

The second sure thing is a sleigh ride with torches, a bonfire and highland music. We arrange shorter versions and versions with dinner at an inn. For a child this is usually the strongest memory of the whole trip.

For a day with heavy snowfall there are the thermal baths, with Bania in Białka at the front, and soft play centres within twenty minutes.

What to pack

Winter under the Tatras can be harsh, and a child gets cold faster than an adult. We have put the detailed list in a separate post, so here only the things people forget most often: a second pair of gloves, spare socks and sun cream, because snow reflects the sun more strongly than a beach.

Why this only works close to the slope

The whole rhythm falls apart when the lift is half an hour away. Then every outing has to be long for the drive to be worth it, and a long outing with a small child ends in exhaustion and tears.

That is the only reason we think that in winter, with children, it is worth looking for a place by the slope rather than in town.
