What to pack for a winter trip to the Tatras with the family
The list of things people forget most often, and a few you can safely leave at home.
Winter packing with children has two extremes: either the boot bursts with things half of which never get used, or on the first frosty morning it turns out there is no second pair of gloves.
This list grew out of conversations with guests and out of what we most often lend them on the spot.
Clothing: layers, not thickness
The three layer rule works better in winter than one thick jumper: a layer that wicks moisture next to the skin, an insulating layer in the middle and a windproof layer on top.
Cotton against the skin is the most common mistake. Once it soaks with sweat it stops warming and cools you faster than it warmed you.
- Thermal underwear, two sets per person
- Fleece or light down as the middle layer
- Waterproof jacket and trousers, for children ideally adjustable
- A hat covering the ears and a neck tube rather than a scarf, scarves come undone
- Gloves, at least two pairs per child, one always gets wet
- Wool socks, a pair for each day plus spares
Boots: the one thing not to save on
In winter under the Tatras boots decide whether the day works. They must be waterproof, with a proper sole, and at least a size roomier so a thick sock fits.
Add micro spikes or anti slip covers. Packed, icy paths can be harder than the trail itself, and micro spikes cost little and fit in a pocket.
What people forget most often
These are the things we lend guests most often, so put them on the list now.
- Sun cream, snow reflects the sun harder than a beach and a face burns in an hour
- Sunglasses, for children too
- A head torch, in winter it gets dark before four
- A thermos, tea on the trail changes the day more than anything else
- Protective cream for lips and face in frost with wind
- A power bank, cold drains a phone in a few hours
Ski equipment: bring it or rent it
For adults who ski regularly, your own equipment usually pays off. For children almost never, because they outgrow skis faster than boots.
Murzasichle Ski has a rental shop and a ski school, so equipment can be taken on the spot without booking ahead. It is worth using at least on the first day, to see whether the child takes to it at all.
What not to bring
A few items from the classic packing lists can safely stay at home if you are staying in an apartment with a kitchenette.
- Towels and bed linen, they are included in the rate
- A hairdryer, there is one in every bathroom
- A set of dishes and pans, the kitchenette is fully equipped
- A week's supply of food, there is a shop nearby and inns within walking distance
One last thing
A swimsuit. It sounds absurd when packing for winter, but it is essential both at the thermal baths and in our spa area. It is the thing every second guest arriving in winter forgets.
