Sauna, jacuzzi and salt cave: how to use a spa and actually rest

The order matters and so does the length of each session. A short guide to what to do in a wellness area when you walk in after a day in the mountains.

A sauna after a hike is one of those things almost everyone does, but few do in a way that actually gives them anything. The most common mistake is one long session at too high a temperature and walking out feeling tired rather than relieved.

Below is a simple pattern that works and requires no secret knowledge.

An order that makes sense

Start with a warm shower and dry yourself thoroughly. Dry skin heats more evenly and the session is more pleasant.

Then the dry sauna, eight to twelve minutes. No longer, even if it feels like you could. A shorter session repeated three times works better than one long one.

After the sauna, cooling: a cold shower or a cold water barrel, always from the feet towards the heart. This is the most important element of the whole ritual, because only the contrast produces the recovery effect.

Finally a rest, at least as long as the session lasted. Only then a second round.

A salt cave is not a sauna

A salt cave works entirely differently, and many guests approach it as another hot cabin. In fact the temperature here is moderate, and the point is calm, long breathing of air saturated with salt.

It is best to go in for twenty minutes after the sauna, once your body has already settled. It is a good place simply to sit and do nothing.

The jacuzzi at the end, not the beginning

Warm, bubbling water relaxes the muscles, but it is not a good prelude to a sauna, because the body receives heat too gently and loses the contrast.

Leave the jacuzzi for the finale of the evening. A quarter of an hour before you leave, when you are no longer planning a cold shower.

A few rules that make a difference

Small things, but they decide how you will feel the next day.

  • Water before, during and after, at least half a litre for the whole session
  • Do not enter the sauna straight after a heavy meal or completely on an empty stomach
  • Alcohol and a sauna are a bad combination, including that glass of wine afterwards
  • After the final cooling do not take a warm shower, let your body finish on its own
  • If your head spins, you leave immediately, no negotiation

Children in the wellness area

The jacuzzi and the salt cave are safe for children with common sense and adult supervision. The dry sauna is another matter: for small children the thermal load is too great, and older ones need only a few minutes on the lowest bench.

Our area is available exclusively to guests of the guesthouse, so in the afternoon you sometimes have it to yourselves with the children, and in the evening it becomes completely quiet.

When to come

The area runs daily from four in the afternoon to nine in the evening. It is calmest right after opening, when most guests are still returning from the trails, and after eight, when families with children finish their day.

The outdoor hydromassage tub and the garden sauna run on request, so it is enough to tell us in advance that you fancy them. In winter, in frost and snow, that is an entirely different experience from the indoor area.
